(Mostly) Humans of Fifth Avenue (Main entrance at 82nd Street), New York

Here are a few more of the non-crime faces I shot in New York on Sunday. From the Metropolitan Museum to Noir at the Bar New York is not a bad way to spend a day.

For reference, here's is that other group I shot.

Ah, Peter, you send me into a melancholy tailspin! The location/source of your photos reminds of when I lived on West 81st Street in 1965. Damn! I feel as old as some of your photographed museum pieces. But, in spite of how I now feel, thanks for sharing.

What was the neighborhood like then? I don't think real people can afford to live there now.

I suppose it would be tactless to remind you that Ars longa, vita brevis.

I lived during the spring and summer of '65 in a 4th floor efficiency on W81st -- couple of blocks west of museums -- reminiscent of the apartment described by Flannery O'Connor in "The Geranium." It was a demographically mixed neighborhood of blue-color residents; I worked at an insurance rating bureau far downtown on 3rd Avenue. I barely survived the expenses then, but I now have no idea what the rent cost me. I was too young and naïve to know that I was too young and naïve to live there on my own. After a few close calls with the nightlife experiences in NYC, I eventually returned to the safety of western Pennsylvania which then was abandoned when the draft board sent me the dreaded letter in December 1965.

People are different in the parts of Manhattan I visit. Little children are all immaculately coiffed and look like spoiled brats, and even the dogs are well trained enough to pay no attention whatsoever to interlopers below a certain income bracket.
